Popular Nail Cutting Service in Melksham from Age UK

As we get older, what were once simple tasks can become more difficult. For a number of reasons, cutting our nails can be one such task – but help and support is available from Age UK Wiltshire’s Nail Cutting Service.

Available to people over the age of 50, the not-for-profit service offers basic nail cutting to those who are unable to cut their own toenails or fingernails.

The service has been running since 2006, and is managed by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers who have undertaken suitable training with qualified podiatrists, in basic nail care.

Coordinator for the service, Tracy Manners, has been part of the team for four years and has seen first hand the benefits the service has brought to its users.

“Something as simple as cutting our own finger nails or bending down to cut our own toenails is taken for granted by many of us” she says. “But being unable to do such simple tasks can be frustrating and with toenails especially, can cause immense discomfort which in turn can lead to other health issues, and even poor mobility, possibly leaving the sufferer at risk of social isolation.”

“Our nail cutting service is very popular and the people who use it are very appreciative. It’s nice to maintain regular contact, and some people have been using the service for years.  Most are quite elderly, and as well as having their nails cut, it’s often also an opportunity for them to meet other people and break the social isolation they might be experiencing.

“We get to know the people who use the service regularly and this also gives us the opportunity to gain an insight into their general health and wellbeing, so we can watch out for any signs that they may need further support.  Age UK Wiltshire offer many other services and we can refer people on if they need help or advice.

“I love my job and working for Age UK is a privilege. I meet so many lovely people and it’s great to feel like I’ve done something good when I get home at the end of the day.”

The nail cutting service comes to Melksham every three weeks and is based at Kestrel Court in Bowerhill and Thornbank near the town centre. Tracy said, “I’d like to say thank you to Selwood Housing, who manage both these locations, and also the Melksham Area Board for their support in bringing this service to the area.”

To use the service, an application needs to be made to determine if the service is suitable for you.

“As there are some medical restrictions, we review all applications before offering our support,” explained Tracy. “We offer a basic nail cutting service, so unfortunately we are unable to treat other foot problems, such as corns and we would always suggest that you seek advice from your GP, a qualified podiatrist, or a pharmacist, if you have other concerns with your feet.

“Once we confirm that someone is suitable for the service, we will make an appointment for their first assessment. We will advise that they bring suitable clippers and a file. But if they don’t have these, they can purchase a set from the clinic for around £10.

“It costs £14 to have your toenails cut; £7 for fingernails; or £20 when done together.”

• For more information about the service or to get an application form, call 01380 727767 or email enquiries@ageukwiltshire.org.uk.
