Councillors at Melksham Without Parish Council have been recognised for their service and commitment at the council’s final meeting of the term on 15th April.
Councillors Shona Holt, Robert Shea-Simmonds and Nathan Keates are finishing their term at the end of this council period but will continue volunteering and contributing to the local community.
Terry Chivers, who stepped down in December after 34 years of service, was also recognised. Having served as a parish councillor since 1986, with a brief break to focus on his role at West Wiltshire District Council, Chivers also held a position as a Wiltshire Councillor for many years.
Clerk Teresa Strange said, “Terry made a useful contribution to the councils, often making others think of things differently. The parish council recognises his outstanding commitment to serving the community and wishes him well in his retirement.”
There will be no election for Melksham Without Parish Council on 1st May, as the number of candidates standing in each ward matched or fell below the number of available seats. Therefore, nine councillors will return unopposed. However, two vacancies remain—one for the Bowerhill Ward and one for the Beanacre, Shaw, Whitley and Blackmore Ward.
“All parish councillors are volunteers, giving their time to serve the community. Some of the returning councillors have served for many years, while others have been co-opted in recent years. The council welcomes anyone interested in the role and encourages them to reach out to learn more about the position and the time commitment required,” the clerk added.
Those interested in being co-opted to fill these vacancies should contact the clerk to confirm their eligibility. To be eligible, candidates must live, work, or own property within the parish or within three miles of its boundary. For further information, contact the clerk at clerk@melkshamwithout-pc.gov.uk
