Proposed new location and longer opening hours for Melksham post office

A NEW town centre location has been identified for Melksham Post Office within a shop selling items such as greeting cards, stationery and confectionary – with longer Post Office opening hours also proposed.

A modern open-plan branch is planned to go into 6-8 Bank Street where Carpet Barn used to be. This is just 250 metres from the current site in Church Street and the new site will offer all the services currently available.

The Post Office is inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the move during a public consultation process which started on 27th November and will run until the New Year.

There will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of the proposed move of Melksham Post Office. Post Office Ltd will be working with staff to ensure their needs are met whether that is a transfer to the new employer or redeployment in the Post Office.

Plans for Melksham’s new town post office include:

• Opening hours to be extended by 14 hours every week

• Modern open-plan branch in newly refurbished premises

• Easy access – automatic door, low-level serving counter and writing desks

• Wide range of products and services

The move is part of a major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to ensure Post Office branches are sustainable, profitable and no longer reliant on Government funding. The modernisation programme will make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern, open-plan environments.

Roger Gale, Crown Network General Manager, said, “We are committed to keeping a Post Office branch in Melksham and to maintaining the same levels of service for our customers.  We believe the best way for us to do this is to change the way we operate it, so if the move goes ahead it will be run by Crab & Andrews Retail Ltd rather than by us directly.”

Crabb & Andrews offer greeting cards, stationery, packaging and confectionery, and currently operate two post office branches from within their stores in Bristol.

They say they have demonstrated to the Post Office that they will be able to successfully run the branch in Melksham, delivering the standards of customer service expected, with trained staff promoting products and services in a modern environment, over extended opening hours.

Opening hours at the proposed new location would be 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday. This means customers in Melksham would benefit from 14 extra hours of service every week.

The Post Office’s customer forum on the proposed move will take place throughout the festive period. It will run as a drop-in information session, with all members of the community and local representatives invited to come along. The intention of the customer forum is to inform customers of the details of the proposal to move Melksham Post Office from its current location and to give more information on the potential new service.

During the public consultation, the community will get a chance to have their say on issues such as the location, the proposed premises, accessibility, or community issues that customers would like considered before a final decision is taken on this proposal. The consultation, which would usually run for six weeks, has been extended to account for the Christmas and New Year period. The consultation process will end on 20th January 2014.The proposed month of the post office move is next March.

Submissions can be made during the consultation through the online questionnaire at postofficeviews.co.uk, by FREEPOST Your Comments to Post Office Ltd, via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, via the Customer Helpline on 08457 22 33 44 or Textphone 08457 22 33 55. Customers are asked to quote branch code 010548 in all communication.

  • Wiltshire Council could lose right to block large housing developments

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Wiltshire Council, along with other Local Planning Authorities across the country, could lose the right to determine large housing developments, according to a report in a national newspaper recently.

The Sunday Times reported that the government – which came to power promising 1.5 million new homes in five years – was considering a shake-up in the way planning applications are determined in a bid to speed up housebuilding.

Under plans set out by housing secretary Steve Reed as part of the Planning and Infrastructure Bill councils would be prevented – the Sunday Times reported – from blocking developments of more than 150 houses.

Instead, those decisions would be made by ministers through the Planning Inspectorate – in the same way that Nationally Important Infrastructure Projects like Lime Down Solar Farm have been taken away from Wiltshire Council.

  • Works to start on 53 affordable homes

Work to build 53 affordable homes in Melksham is due to begin after approval was granted for the second phase of a development on land off Semington Road.

The Planning Inspector ruled last year that the development could go ahead on the 5.8-acre site, which will see 53 affordable homes built beside the 50 homes approved in 2023 during phase one.

Developer Living Space submitted a reserved matters planning application covering size, scale, appearance and landscaping, which has now been approved by Wiltshire Council.

Construction will deliver 32 homes for affordable rent and 21 shared ownership properties, including one-bed maisonettes, two-bed bungalows and two, three and four-bedroom family houses.

  • Cadets join forces with Royal British Legion

Melksham Army Cadets are now officially affiliated with the local Royal British Legion (RBL) branch.

A special parade was held recently to mark the affiliation, where the head of the Melksham RBL branch, Trevor Paterson, had the privilege of inspecting the cadets as he presented them with their RBL affiliation badge, which they proudly wore for the first time at the Remembrance Sunday commemorations in November.

A spokesperson for the branch said it was a ‘proud day’ for the ever-growing detachment, which has made significant contributions to the RBL Poppy Appeal on an annual basis for many years.

The affiliation means the two groups will work more closely to raise funds for the RBL and support the local community.

  • Over 400 trees planted for new community woodland

Hundreds of trees have been planted in Melksham in the first phase of a new community woodland.

Volunteers from the Melksham Green Space group along with local residents planted over 400 young native saplings along Clackers Brook on Sunday 30th November, marking the start of an ambitious plan to turn the land into a thriving woodland and nature trail for local people and wildlife.

Nigel Benham, Chair of Melksham Green Space, said, “Over 400 trees and shrubs were planted including English oak, willow, birch, wild cherry, field maple, hazel and hawthorn.

“We intend to watch over these trees over the next few years until established and to add more in the years ahead with the aim of creating a green corridor through Clackers Brook. This will enhance the wildlife habitat, provide a beautiful tree lined area for residents to enjoy and hopefully help mitigate flooding, which is becoming an increasing problem in this day and age."

  • Cricket community rally for disabled stalwart

A fundraiser has been launched by the local cricketing community to help a long-standing disabled member and match scorer to continue to travel to games as his condition worsens.

Paul Stevens, a key member of the Melksham cricket community for nearly 20 years, is rapidly losing use of his legs after being diagnosed with Body Myositis, a rare muscle-wasting condition, in 2019.

Despite his diagnosis, Paul continues to be involved in cricket and sports across the South West and has served as a player, umpire and scorer for Melksham Cricket Club, a role he still carries out today.

As his condition worsens, Paul is at risk of becoming isolated and housebound, unable to travel to games. However, the local cricket community has rallied in support and is seeking to raise £35,000 to purchase Paul a wheelchair-adapted vehicle.

  • Supermarket criticised over reduced parking hours

Parking at Sainsbury’s supermarket in Melksham has been reduced from three hours to two, prompting claims that a previous commitment to the town has been reversed.

The change, which came into effect recently, has drawn criticism from residents who say the supermarket introduced three hours’ free parking as a gesture of goodwill after its major expansion in 2011, which included the loss of around 400 trees.

Local resident Helen Reid said, “Many residents will remember that when the store expanded some years ago – removing a large number of trees and sparking a strong local campaign against the development – Sainsbury’s extended free parking to three hours as an apology to the community.

“That gesture was meant to acknowledge the environmental impact and disruption caused by the expansion. Now, without any apparent notice or consultation, that goodwill has been withdrawn.”
