Pupils get moving with GB Paralympian

Pupils at St Mary’s Broughton Gifford Primary School had a visit from GB Paralympian Rachael Latham as part of a Sports for Schools initiative, on Friday 23rd June, where they took part in a sponsored circuit event and raised £1,343 for new sports equipment for the school.

Pupil services officer, Catherine Bridge said, “Children from Beech, Maple and Oak Class took part and enjoyed a fun afternoon outside, taking part in the circuit organised by Rachael and they then were inspired by an assembly with Rachael where they had the opportunity to ask her lots of questions about her life and career as a GB athlete.”

Rachael was born with Erb’s Palsy, a paralysis of the arm caused by an injury to the arm’s main nerves. She started swimming at age three and, using only one arm to swim, was introduced to para-swimming aged nine. She has won medals at the World Championships and World Cups and competed for Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in the Beijing in 2008 before retiring from competitive swimming in 2010 due to on-going injuries.
