MELKSHAM Town Council is encouraging the community to use less plastic by refilling their reusable drinking containers with water at the Town Hall.
During opening hours, members of the public can call into the Town Hall to fill up their drinking containers with cold water fresh from the council’s supply.
Council staff have also purchased reusable drinking containers in an effort to reduce the amount of single-use plastic at the Town Hall.
The council’s offer of free drinking water is part of the Refill campaign – a growing national scheme that encourages making free and safe drinking water available to all, whilst helping to reduce the sale of plastic bottles.
The scheme is part of the council’s pledge, made in 2018, to become an accredited plastic-free town.
The council also voted last month to support Wiltshire Council’s declaration of a ‘Climate Emergency’, pledging carbon neutrality across the county by 2030.The town council intends to promote local awareness of the dangers of climate change and create new climate friendly policies to help achieve carbon neutrality.
