Given the current lockdown situation across England, Melksham Town Council has placed a wreath of remembrance at the town’s War Memorial on Wednesday 4 November, rather than at a service on Remembrance Sunday this year.
The town council say, “A short video of the Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor paying their respects and laying a wreath on behalf of the Town Council and people of the town, will be taken and made available on the Melksham Town Council YouTube channel on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November.
“We are in challenging times and this course of action has been brought about by the need to increase Covid-19 security. We emphasise that the safety of the public and that of our councillors and staff underpinned this decision. Many of our veterans too, will be of increasing years and therefore potentially more vulnerable to bad outcomes from the virus.
“The Town Council encourages residents, who wish to participate, to join in Doorstep Remembrance at 11.00 AM on Sunday 8th November, in order to pay their respects in a Covid-19 secure manner.
“We trust you share our disappointment that the traditional Remembrance Sunday service cannot go ahead in these circumstances, and understand the Town Council’s decision to cancel this year. We hope to resume with the usual commemorations next year.”
