THIRTY new retirement flats could soon be built on Spa Road after outline permission was given to build a complex opposite Wharf Court.
The plans, which cannot yet go ahead without a more detailed study of the site, could see the existing Withleigh House demolished and new retirement flats built on the site and surrounding gardens.
Developers McCarthy & Stone have said the development will be beneficial to both new and existing residents in the area. It says that closeness to the town centre will mean fewer people have to travel by car, that it will provide a social environment for ageing people to live in, and that people moving there will free up other homes in the town.
Melksham Town Council supported the scheme, but did raise concern about traffic, loss of amenity and privacy of nearby homes, and parking requirements.
