AS part of the national competition ‘Race for the Line’, Year 7 students at Melksham Oak Community School were asked to build a car and test how far they could go with rockets, with the girls’ team reaching the national finals.
During the event the 15 teams competed against each other and the top two teams went on to the regional finals at MOD Corsham, aided by the armed services.
Both teams designed and built their car on the day, including streamlining styrofoam bodies to make them more aerodynamic, and along with their competitors, raced the rocket car on the drag strip. The girls’ team car achieved a speed of 34.75mph over a distance of 20m and finished runners-up.
They will now advance to the national finals held on the 28th June at RAF Wittering against the 39 other top teams. Over 18,000 teams have been competing for one of these 40 spots.
Kirstie Jones, head of D&T at the school said, “Melksham Oak Community School is very proud of what they achieved and the girls are very excited to represent the school. It is a very prestigious event!’
