Scouts from 1st Bowerhill Scout Group travelled to London recently to play a real-time version of Monopoly to practise their navigation, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The group of 14 Scouts, one young leader and eight adult leaders travelled to London in their scout minibus to play the game along with 8,000 Scouts and Guides from across the country.
“Teams have one designated player who logs onto an app,” explained a Scout lead volunteer, Neal Brookes. “This then gives you various places to visit around London.”
“The event started in Hyde Park. The phone is tracked, and when you are close enough to a place, for example, Oxford Street, you check in and are given the choice of visiting or buying. If somebody has bought it first, you then have to pay a rental charge, just like the game. You can only travel by train, tube or bus.”
Each team starts with the virtual sum of £1,500. “There are also quizzes and challenges along the way to help build up your money,” says Neal.
“The group had a great time and the weather was kind to us this year. This was the third year that we’ve taken part, and we are already looking forward to next year’s race!”
Monopoly Run Live started in 2007. It initially began as an event for Explorer Scouts before being extended to include all Scout groups.
