A BUS shelter on Blackmore Road which was installed just six weeks ago following a six-year campaign, was recently vandalised.
Three local women, Pam Griffin, Maureen Woodruff and Sandy Shepherd, spent six years campaigning for the bus shelter to be installed on the Blackmore Road which was finally installed in March this year. But last week, a pane of glass in the shelter was smashed.
Pam Griffin said, “It is very disappointing because everyone was so happy when it was installed as it does help a lot of people, especially the elderly.
“It’s just mindless vandalism and I know we can’t prove that it was done on purpose but they would have to hit the glass very hard to smash it, so it must have been deliberate.
“I went to my neighbour’s house at about 5.30pm and it wasn’t smashed, but then my neighbour rang me at 7pm and asked me if I’d seen the shelter. So it must have happened between 6-7pm. It’s a busy road, especially at that time, so someone must have seen something.”
Councillor Bruce Sanders who supported the campaign said, “The fact that it has only taken six weeks for somebody to vandalise the bus shelter is a bit of a slap in the face to the local residents who campaigned for several years to get the facility.”
Melksham Town Council says the replacement glass will be ordered and replaced as soon as possible.
