THERE is still time to sign up for next week’s Wiltshire 10 race on Sunday 11th February in Melksham.

The run starts in Lowbourne Road and takes a certified accurate 10-mile course out around the historic village of Lacock before returning back to finish alongside the River Avon in King George V Playing Fields.

Last year former England 10K champion Daniel Studley of Bristol & West AC shattered the course record with a time of 49-minutes with ladies race winner Ruth Barnes of Avon Valley Runners recording 56-minutes to record one of the fastest times in Britain over the distance in 2017.

Organiser Darren Wrintmore said, “However it is not just at the sharp end that the race holds appeal as we expect over 500 runners to complete the course and all will receive a specially minted medal and a goody bag. Prizes will also be on offer to the first three men and women to complete the course, as well as to the winners of the V40, V50 and V60 age categories.”

More details on the run including details of online entry can be found at www.stampedesports.co.uk

  • Have your say on proposed Melksham car park charges increase

Residents are invited to have their say on proposed changes to car park charges in Melksham, including higher parking fees, longer chargeable hours, and new Sunday tariffs.

Wiltshire Council is proposing the changes for all council-owned car parks, including those in Melksham.

Plans include an average 20% rise in parking charges in 2026, followed by a further 5% increase in 2028, an extension of chargeable parking hours to 7am–7pm, and changes to Sunday parking charges to bring them in line with weekend rates.

In Melksham, one-hour parking would increase from 30p–40p to 50p–60p per hour. All-day parking would rise from £6.00–£7.70 to £7.10–£9.10.

  • Melksham Town Ladies set for historic League Cup Final appearance

Melksham Town Ladies FC will compete in the League Cup Final this Sunday 12th April, their first appearance in a cup final in eight years.

They will face Abbey Meads Ladies from Swindon at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett (SN4 8DS) with a 2pm kick-off.

“This final represents a huge milestone for the team and the wider women’s game in Melksham,” said Manager Adam Mulliss.

“This is a massive moment for the team, and your support can make all the difference. Come along, get behind the girls, and help create an atmosphere they deserve. Get yourselves down next Sunday and be part of something special!

“We’ve had a really strong run to the final, picking up impressive victories over Westbury, Chippenham and Keynsham along the way. The standout moment for us was definitely the win against Chippenham, where we fielded our youngest squad of the season."

  • Bath Operatic Group, Live at Shaw

A concert celebrating well-known musical theatre is set to take place in Shaw later this month.

The second ‘Live at Shaw’ event will be held at Christ Church, Shaw, on Friday 17th April, starting at 7.30pm and will feature the Bath Operatic Group presenting an “A-Z of musicals”.

The group dates back to 1948 when the Oldfield Park Rangers Company presented a performance of Hiawatha, followed by HMS Pinafore the next year. In 1951 men were allowed to join and the name was changed to The Bath Youth Operatic Group.

After putting on five performances including The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and Patience, the group moved to The Palace Theatre. In 1956 they moved to their final home The Theatre Royal Bath, where they produce a large musical each Autumn, and changed to the present name The Bath Light Operatic Group.

As well as its main productions, the group presents a series of concerts each year, and will bring one of these to Shaw.

  • Local woman celebrates 103rd birthday

A Shaw resident has celebrated her 103rd birthday with friends and family.

Betty, who lives at Mavern House Care Home, said her secret to a long life is ‘having a good breakfast’ and ‘lucky genes.’

She said, “I had a wonderful birthday with my family and friends. The team here at Mavern House are so kind and caring and they made the day really special for me. I feel very lucky.

“I think the secret to a long life is a good breakfast and probably genetics too. There are several people in my family who have reached their 90s, so lucky genes must play a part.”

Born in Bath in 1923 to Scottish parents, Betty grew up in the West Country. She had hoped to study science at university, but the war intervened, so instead she trained as a teacher at Bath College of Domestic Science. There she developed a lifelong passion for cooking and became a talented cook.

  • Traffic gridlock as drivers flock to Melksham for ‘cheapest fuel’

Melksham town centre has regularly faced gridlock recently as drivers flock to the Sainsbury’s petrol station to fill up with cheaper fuel.

Local councillors and residents report that the Melksham branch has significantly lower prices than other local stations and Sainsbury’s outlets in nearby towns.

Queues at the petrol station have caused traffic to back up and gridlock through the town centre, frustrating local residents trying to get around.

Fuel prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, due to disruption to global oil supplies linked to the war in Iran.

At the Full Council meeting on Monday 30th March, Cllr Jennie Westbrook said people are travelling from other town to take advantage of the lower prices in Melksham, leaving the town centre gridlocked.

“I know people who are driving from Chippenham, from Bradford-on-Avon and even from Trowbridge because it’s so much cheaper than anywhere else,” she said.
