Six-year wait is over for new bus shelter

LOCAL bus users had cause for celebration this month when their six- year campaign for a new bus stop on Blackmore Road came to an end.

Thanks to the efforts of local women Pam Griffin, Maureen Woodruff and Sandy Shepherd, people can stand out of the wind and rain next time they wait for a bus at the stop opposite Gloucester Square.

Maureen said, “We’d like to thank everyone who has helped us campaign for this bus shelter, and particularly to town councillor Bruce Sanders.

“For years, the stop has been just a sign on a lamppost, and we’ve had to stand in the cold wind and rain while waiting for a bus that we use almost every day.”

The stop is served by a number of buses including the 14 Melksham Metro town service.

“We were first told we’d get a shelter about six years ago,” Pam said. “After that, it fell by the wayside for a while until we started going to council meetings and asking for it. We’re ecstatic now that the shelter is up and it really will make a difference to our everyday lives.”
