A special Wall of Remembrance, commemorating those Wiltshire soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War, is continuing its tour of the county by visiting Melksham.
The display will be at Melksham until Monday 27th October. It is constructed of crosses made by thousands of local school children across the county with each containing the name of a soldier who lost their life – 10,000 in total.
The soldiers’ backgrounds have been meticulously researched by the pupils. The exhibition was the main focus at the First World War commemoration event hosted by Wiltshire Council and the military at Tidworth Military Cemetery in July.
Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott said, “We feel it’s important that future generations recognise the sacrifices made, and with the children decorating a poppy for each and every fallen soldier it has really helped to bring to life the stories of those that served.
“I hope many people across the county get a chance to see the display.”
The wall has previously had stays in Marlborough and Devizes. The wall will also go on display at other venues across the county including Salisbury, Chippenham, Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon over the coming months.
