Spencer Melksham Bowls Club captain Claire Edwards and her partner Jayne Edwards will be representing Wiltshire at the Bowls England national finals at Leamington Spa in August. They will also be competing to be overall Wiltshire Pairs Champions later in the season.
They won the quarter-final and semi-final of the Ladies Pairs Competition on 29th and 30th June to qualify for the final.
“What better way to celebrate the club’s centenary year than to get to the national finals of your sport?” says a member of the club, Anne Hutchinson.
“This year has seen record entries from the club in county and national competitions, with many teams proceeding deep into the competition.
“The same weekend saw the men’s triples teams led by Matt Edwards and Richard George playing against each other in the quarterfinals, with Matt’s team taking a narrow victory to put them into the semi-final.
“His team was then narrowly beaten in the semi-final, preventing a fairy tale ending to the weekend of Spencer’s having two teams reach national finals. Also, in the action that weekend, Jamie Pugsley and I won an Aussie Pairs match, securing progression for Jamie into the next round,” said Anne.
“The following weekend saw Alan George progress to the last 16 of the National 2 Bowl Singles Competition, to be played on 21st July. Friday 12th July, saw the start of the Singles Competition with all six of our rinks in action, as members looked to secure wins into the second round.
“We have also found time to welcome seven teams from the area recently to a centenary match as well as planning to welcome teams from Bowls Wiltshire to play us on Sunday 28th July. Anyone who would like to come along and watch can be sure of a warm welcome at the Club on Beanacre Road.”
