At the start of this year, Stonar’s Prep school chose to support the charity Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) They have gone on to raise a grand total of £5,156.34.
When asked why they felt so passionately about the cause, pupils said, “Saving endangered animals is important, and by bringing back the rainforests, we’ll also be helping thousands of other types of animal too.”
On Tuesday 14th January, Rachel Goves a representative from the SOS came to Stonar school during assembly to receive their cheque from our fundraising efforts last year. The children in Prep including current Year 7 have raised over £5,000 through a number of fundraising events
List of fundraising activities; • Easter egg raffle • summer celebration church collection • summer fete stalls • Prep treasure hunt • T-shirt sale • ice lolly sale • Prep disco • Prep film night • Christmas carol service collection
During the assembly Rachel Groves, the development director at SOS talked to the children about all the great work that the charity do and how the funds raised by Stonar will be used to help protect the orangutans.
Rachel Groves said, “We are always delighted when schools carry out fundraising for us, as not only is the money raised incredibly helpful in achieving our goals in Sumatra, it also shows how much young people care about the environment and understand the importance of protecting it. We are grateful to everyone at Stonar School for their hard work in raising over £5,000 for our work in Sumatra”.
The charity’s ultimate mission is to protect wild orangutans and create safe forests for them and all the other animals to live in.
SOS work around the clock to rescue orangutans in danger, and return them to safe forests, where they belong. Together with their partners in Sumatra, SOS are reclaiming and restoring the land for wildlife.
