Melksham continued with their fine run of form and a narrow 1-0 victory at Street gave them their tenth win in their last 11 games and their fifth clean sheet in their last six games.
The game was played on a firm playing surface with a strong breeze favouring the home side in the first period, and Melksham needed a goal line clearance from Thomson after only two minutes to stop Murray giving Street the lead.
On 20 minutes Melksham’s Thompson made a fine block from Emerson’s free kick and in game with few scoring opportunities Melksham keeper Brown held onto a shot from Herrod on 32 minutes. On 40 minutes Street’s Ward picked up the first caution of the game and the half time interval was reached without further goalmouth action and the sides level at 0-0 .
The second half saw Melksham take advantage of the breeze at their backs and they nearly went ahead on 57 minutes when Higdon was unable to force home a Thomson cross that was just out of his reach and the ball ballooned over the bar from close range.
However on the hour mark the Town went ahead. A Ben Thomson free kick on the Town left caused confusion in the Street six yard box and the ball bounced off a home defender and past the stranded keeper Punchard into the goal for the opening goal of the game.
Despite prompting from Street’s Emerson the home side found it difficult to penetrate a resolute Town defence with Thompson commanding in central defence.
On 70 minutes Town fullback Maidment picked up a caution for a foul and was soon replaced by Ibrahim from the Town bench.
On 79 minutes a delightful Benison pass found Perrott racing in on goal but his left foot lob cleared the bar whilst at the other end Town keeper Brown bravely saved at the feet of Milton on 83 minutes.
On 85 minutes James replaced Thomson and the Town saw the game out to chisel out a 1-0 victory against a good Street side and maintain their good run of results of late.
Next up a trip to Hallen on Tuesday followed by a double header next weekend which sees them entertain Bristol Manor Farm on Saturday and Street at home in the following Monday evening.
The Towns Reserves followed up a 2-0 midweek victory over Calne with a disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to Shrewton despite a goal from Leigh Rogers.
The Towns A team were resounding 5-0 winners over The Stiffs with the evergreen James Eatough notching a hat trick and goals from Ollie Gee and Nathan Walker.
