YOUNG people from across Melksham were able to take advantage fun positive activities delivered by the Young Melksham Team at The Canberra Centre as part of the Wiltshire Council FUEL programme.
The scheme offered four hours of activities a day to eligible young people Monday to Thursday with a variety of activities from sports activities, creative activities, healthy eating, and time to socialise with peers.
Centre coordinator Jack Oatley commented, “We were excited to be appointed by Wiltshire Council to be one of their FUEL activities camps. Over the last four weeks the young people have developed close friendships with each other and with the staff team and it has been wonderful to see them so positively engaging in the activities we have provided and stretching themselves to learn new skills.”
Part of the programme saw the young people joined by representatives from the Melksham Men’s Shed Group who worked with the young people to create planters, made from recycled pallets.
Jack explained, “We wanted to find a way of getting some inter-generational work with the young and not so young getting together and producing something the young people could take home. I was delighted that the Men’s Shed Group agreed to help us deliver this and the young people really enjoyed being able to try out the various tools and see the product of their hard work.”
One of the young people participating, Josh aged 13, said “It was great fun, I’ve learnt some new skills and appreciated the help the Men’s Shed gave.”
Jack Oatley added, “I am so grateful to the Shed Club for the help they gave us. We could not have delivered this exciting activity without their help and the young people really enjoyed taking part”.
