FOUR dedicated swimmers from Melksham, who all swim at Melksham Swordfish ASC and Team Bath ASC have been competing at the ASA 2018 regional championships.
Tilly Birkett, Margot Lewy-Pierre, Elliot Wood and Molly Watts have returned from two full weekends of competition and return home with some great results.
The regional age group event was run over two consecutive weekends and it resulted in some even more amazing results for the swimmers with medals, finals and PBs (personal best times) all round.
Melksham Swordfish ASC says, “All the swimmers qualified for multiple events during the season and this accumulated in an amazing show at the championships.
“Tilly Birkett made it to the Finals of the 50 back with a 4th place finish and a PB of 33.15. In the 100 back Tilly gained an epic PB time of 1.12.93 with a 7th place finish overall in the south west finals and a PB in 50 fly.
“Elliot Wood achieved one of the swims of his life in the 200 fly, a PB and a bronze medal. He also came 6th in the 100 fly and a bank of other personal best times.
“Margot Lewy-Pierre who qualified for five different events after an amazing performance over the season made it in to both the 100 and 200 freestyle finals gaining an 8th place in the SW region for both 100 and 200 freestyle.
“Molly Watts was the youngest ever Melksham Swordfish swimmer to qualify for the SW regionals and at her first ever regional champs got a 5th place in the 200 backstroke, an 11th place in the 50 back and 16th in the 100 back.
“The swimmers all qualified for multiple events and achieved some outstanding results that they should all be very proud of.
“Melksham Swordfish have produced several great swimmers over the years but this is the highest number that have gone on to compete at the SW regionals and their hard work has paid off.
“We are all very proud of the swimmers and of the continued hard work they put in. With the new sports complex on the cards, the hopes of a bigger and better pool and gym facilities may soon be a reality. It would be great to see the council realise that this is a great opportunity and one not to be missed to bring a 50 metre pool to the county that it is severely lacking.
“The facilities would not only benefit Melksham’s competitive swimmers but Wiltshire as a whole and its many clubs from swimmers to divers, water polo and canoeing and so much more.”
