Slimbridge 2 Melksham Town 4
MELKSHAM Town FC has continued its great run of wins with another two victories, climbing the league to sixth place.
The wins against Cirencester Town and Slimbridge, extends Town’s unbeaten run to 10 league games including seven wins on the trot.
The club now sit in sixth place in the league, one place outside the play-offs. And Town’s manager, Richard Fey, says that the team are ‘buzzing, with team spirit at a season high.
The first win of the fortnight came against Cirencester Town who, like Melksham, were enjoying a recent run of good form. With goals from Luke Ballinger, Jake Mawford and Phil Ormrod, Town came away with a dramatic 3-2 win.
Speaking to Melksham News, Richard said, “We were top of the form charts with Cirencester who were second – they have a new manager, were unbeaten, and they had three clean sheets in five – so we knew it was going to be tough. We weren’t at our best, but we scored three great goals – and conceded two sloppy goals.
“The lads were confident and kept the winning run going. We managed to score three goals against a team that are very good at defending, and that shows our fire power going forward – we can score goals against the best in the league. We just need to tighten up at the other end.
“But credit where it’s due, the lads were excellent and we fully deserved the three points with our second half performance.”
Next up for Town was Slimbridge. A hat-trick from Phil Ormrod and a goal from Jake Mawford, saw Town grab another victory, winning 4-2.
“At the time Slimbridge were above us in the league, just outside the play-offs themselves,” said Richard. “We went 2-nil up at half time with great goals from Phil Ormrod and Jake Mawford.
“In the second half we weren’t really in trouble, we had the wind behind us and we were doing really well until we gave away a penalty, then another two minutes later through Josh Ford, who unfortunately got sent off with 25 minutes to go. And then you fear the worst as it’s 2-2, and we’ve been in this situation before, but the boys have learnt from that and they showed great character and great fitness levels, and spirit. Will Christopher delivered a great cross with two minutes to go and Phil Ormrod scored a great header. And then Ormrod scored again in injury time.
“To score four goals against a team that were just outside the play-offs, shows that we can score the goals. We just need to stop the sloppy mistakes and giving away goals.”
The next match for Town this Saturday, 18th January, sees them come face to face with Thatcham Town, who currently sit top of the league with a convincing lead on their rivals.
Richard said, “We can’t wait! With the form we are in, we are ready to play anyone. We have a great squad, great team spirit. And the travelling support we get away from home is excellent – they are really vocal and get behind us. We are really looking forward to it. The boys were buzzing in training, so hopefully we can get a positive result.
“It’s a freebie for us, because no one expected us to be sat in sixth position in the league with a brand new squad. We are going to go there and give it our best shot – it’s going to be a good day, with hopefully a good result.”
Town play away to Thatcham Town on Saturday 18th January, kick off is at 3pm.
