MELKSHAM Oak Community School hosted The Big Melksham Science Share last week with 150 pupils from Melksham primary schools enjoying a day of science fun.
Pupils from The Academy Trust of Melksham primary schools, supported by the Primary Science Teaching Trust and Bath Taps into Science, shared their own science investigations with each other on the theme of sports science. There was a whole host of hands-on activities designed by the children to take part in, as well as a presentation from Bath University and a live Skype link up with Prof. Danielle George at Manchester University.
Carol Sampey, Fellow of the Primary Science Teaching Trust said, “This is a really important event as it brings schools together with the support from Melksham Oak. It is also a brilliant way of linking the primary schools with the secondary school in a creative and exciting way.”
Melksham Oak science teacher, Tamsin Egan said, “It was a fantastic day and the children really enjoyed themselves. The Big Science day is a great way to encourage enthusiasm about science in a creative and collaborative way. I believe the best approach to bring science into schools is by being active.”
One pupil from Churchfield School said, “My favourite stand was the one about the germs; you get to see how quickly germs spread,” and a pupil from St George’s said, “My favourite part was the Smoothie-making bit. It was fun.”
Ash from St George’s said, “It’s been an exciting day. I enjoyed learning about gravity when you kick a ball and lots of other things.”

The Independent Chapel and Women’s Rights in the 1840s
A document I recently transcribed lists the baptisms performed at the Independent Chapel. This record is especially helpful in that, along with baptisms, a lot of them include birth dates - one of the ways I discover which day someone was born.
The following is taken from a Wiltshire Times article published on 9th November 1878 which reports a speech given during the 100-year services and to celebrate their renovations (what we now know to be the Rachel Fowler Centre).
One speaker, Rev. T. Mann, minister in Trowbridge, talked about the Chapel’s origins when he related how Rev. Honywill came to Melksham and how he’d gone on to remain as the minister for the Independent Chapel for almost 60 years. [Honywill and his family lived on King Street in what we now call “Legion House”.]
