Saturday 26th February Southern League Div. One Sholing 5 Melksham Town 0
DESPITE Town losing 5-0 to Sholing at the weekend, the club is sitting in ninth place in the Southern league with its eyes set on a top 10 finish, and chairman of Melksham Town Football Club, Darren Perrin, thinks there is a lot to be thankful for.
“Manager Richard Fey, the staff, and the players have done exceptionally well this season,” Darren told Melksham News. “First and foremost, it’s been nice to have a full season, Covid free so far, and it looks like we’re going to finish the season for the first time in three years!
“We are where we are at the moment – I expect that we will finish in the top 10 of the league. There’s been some inconsistencies, some fantastic performances and one or two disappointing performances; but that’s football.
“I am absolutely delighted with the effort and commitment from the management, they’ve worked extremely hard. We’ve got some good young players coming through the system from our youth section. And it’s been rewarding in the last few weeks to see Richard start to look more and more at the younger players in training, which can only bode well for the future of the club – if we can produce more players from our own youth section, the better.”
Darren also had praise for the success of Melksham Town’s other teams.
“The reserve side are in the top six of their league,” he said. “The development side is well run and organised; the Ladies have a great chance of winning their league; the Veterans are going to finish top or second; and the under 18s finished in the top three.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the club at the moment – we are doing okay!”
Off the pitch, supporting the community remains a core focus for the club.
Collection for Ukrainian refugees
At their upcoming home games on Saturday 5th March against Bideford AFC and on Saturday 12th March against Sholing, the club has arranged collection points for donations to send to Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
“We’re delighted to be supporting the community with more and more events and fundraisers,” said Darren. “The support that we have had from the Melksham community and surrounding area has been remarkable – so it’s fantastic to return the favour. It’s not all about take, take, take!
“We have the firework display in November, we hosted the charity football match in memory of Ben Smith, and we have organised collections to help support Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion.
“Wherever we can help as a football club we will do so – we’re at the front of the community and the community does look to us to take the lead.”
