Students shine at Melksham Oak’s Winter Showcase

Musical creativity was on full display at Melksham Oak Community School earlier this month as students performed in the school’s annual Winter Showcase.

A total of 23 students from Year 7 to 12 showcased their skills on a range of instruments, including guitar, drums and piano, for an audience of friends and family.

The performances included popular cover songs such as Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen, Angel Eyes by ABBA and Money for Nothing by Dire Straits.

For some students, this was their first time performing on stage.

“It was a fantastic evening with an exceptional array of talent on the stage,” said the head of Melksham Oak’s music department, Mike Thomas. “It was a result of many months of hard work coming into the department during breaks, lunches and after school to hone their skills and develop their confidence performing.

“Of the 23 acts on show, 12 were performing for the first time and had overcome their nerves and anxiety to be standing on the stage with beaming smiles to the rapturous applauses after each performance.

“Everyone taking part should be extremely proud of themselves and I can’t wait to see what they do in the next concert in July.”

  • Community litter-picking scheme launches in Melksham

A new community litter-picking station has launched in Melksham, giving residents the chance to help keep the town clean and reduce litter entering local waterways.

The free litter-picking station, provided through The 2 Minute Foundation’s #2MinuteLitterPick campaign, was launched in Melksham Market Place on 28th July.

The initiative aims to make litter picking more accessible by encouraging residents, visitors and community groups to borrow the equipment, spend a few minutes collecting litter, then return the picker and reusable bag so others can take part.

The station will move to different locations around Melksham, providing a long-term resource for community clean-up efforts.

Melksham friends have completed a 1,538-mile European rally in a Rover 45, raising nearly £3,000 for Wiltshire Mind and ending the adventure with a surprise marriage proposal.

The route saw the team travel through Reims Circuit, Annecy, Mont Cenis Lake, Sanremo, Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez and Arles.

Originally donated to the group, the Rover 45 was transformed into the ‘Duck Mobile’ with duck-themed decorations, stickers and rubber ducks added with support from local people.

  • Melksham youngsters enjoy free football in park

Young footballers took to the pitch at King George V Park on Friday 7th August for a free football session during the summer holidays.

The Free Football Friday session was run by Future of Football (FOF), giving local youngsters the chance to enjoy the sport for free, whether they regularly play for a local club or were picking up a football for the first time.

The programme has been supported by Melksham Town Council, which has organised a range of sporting opportunities for young people during the school holidays.

Head of Coaching and Development at FOF, Curtis Goodwin, said, “It’s been great to see such a brilliant turnout for the sessions. We’ve had over 100 children sign up for the summer dates, and it’s nice for our team of coaches to give back to the community.”

  • Carers walk 150 miles for armed forces charity

A local care team has completed a 150-mile weighted walking challenge in aid of Help for Heroes, finishing the final mile at King George V Park in Melksham.

The team of seven from Steps Ahead Care and Support completed the challenge throughout July, wearing between 5kg and 20kg of weight to reflect the physical demands placed on military personnel.

They took on the fundraiser to support Help for Heroes, a charity that has been helping their client, Melksham military veteran Simon Cooper, who sustained a spinal cord injury in an accident six years ago.

The team walked five miles every day, including during temperatures of more than 30°C, and raised £1,800 for the charity.

  • Melksham teens share views on social media ban

Young people in Melksham have shared mixed views on the government’s planned ban on social media for under-16s.

The government has announced plans to prevent children under 16 from using social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube from next spring. The measures are intended to help protect children from harmful content and addictive features online.

Melksham News work experience student Ethan spoke to local young people to find out what they think of the planned ban.

Archie, 14, who uses TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat, said he did not think the ban would affect him much because he did not rely on social media.

  • Melksham rugby club launches kit recycling initiative

An initiative to save rugby kit from landfill and support families facing financial hardship has launched at Melksham Rugby Club thanks to a local business.

The club has introduced a new kit bin where players can donate their old Melksham Rugby Club kit for others to use. The bin was donated by Dave Guley from Melksham Recycling and Skips Ltd and is open for anyone in Melksham to use.

Youth section chairman Simon Laidlaw said, “If your children have outgrown any club or rugby kit that’s still in good condition, simply pop it into the kit bin at the club. Our amazing volunteers will sort, display and offer the donated kit on occasional Sundays, where families can take what they need in exchange for a voluntary donation.”

  • Outrage as government overrides local decision with 300-home approval

Residents have reacted with anger to the government’s decision to approve up to 300 new homes on a site not allocated for housing in Melksham’s Neighbourhood Plan, overturning a decision made by local councillors

The Secretary of State has allowed a developer appeal for new homes at Snarlton Farm, east of Eastern Way, overturning Wiltshire Council’s decision to refuse the scheme.

Residents have questioned what the point of a Neighbourhood Plan is if developments which conflict with it can still be approved, with one describing the decision as an “outrage” and another calling it “appalling”.

Appalled

Local councillors and MP Brian Mathew have also raised concerns over the decision.

Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council member for Bowerhill, said, “I am appalled to see the decision from the Secretary of State. This decision flies in the face of our Neighbourhood Plan, which was voted on by local residents.
