Revellers enjoy online carnival

RESIDENTS young and old enjoyed the spectacle of carnival at the weekend – all from the comfort of their own home.
The Melksham Town Lockdown Virtual Carnival was held online in place of what would have been the annual Melksham Carnival procession (4th July).
Organised by the Melksham Carnival committee, Melksham Town Council and the Lockdown Festival, the day featured a virtual carnival procession using videos and photos of previous carnivals. There was also a Lockdown Festival concert, a number of interactive games and competitions, and a carnival window competition for local shops to get involved in.
Organisers said, “Most Melksham Virtual Lockdown Carnival posts uploaded on Facebook through the week reached between 1,000 to 2,000 views, which exceeded our expectations. We also received hundreds of photographs from people of Melksham Carnivals past, which we made into short films and posted on The Lockdown Festival Facebook page for people to like and share.
For the ‘Design Your Float’ competition, the 1st prize winners were Lewis, age 9 and Alexa age 4 Atkins; 2nd prize Matilda Hubbard age 10; and 3rd Edwin Heyward (no age given). All winners will receive a carnival certificate and photographs of their entries will be displayed at the Town Hall when reopened to the public.
“The winner for the ‘Take your Seat’ competition was Chris Holden who wins an Assembly Hall VIP family ticket for any 2021 shows.
“And the results of the Melksham Carnival Window competition were as follows – 1st place The Toy Shop; 2nd place Belle of the Ball Bridals; 3rd place Harmony. And highly recommended were Devlin Bridal Couture, Cobblers Bench and Flower Care.”
