MELKSHAM Town Council has formally objected to Leekes’ plans to build a Premier Inn hotel and a Beefeater restaurant in the store’s car park.
The council has raised concerns about the height of the building, the impact on traffic and parking in the area, access to the site, and the impact the current design could have on residents living nearby. The planning application for the 71-bed hotel and a 246-cover restaurant on the ground floor were submitted in January.
The plans have also brought objections from residents living opposite the proposed development. In addition to similar concerns raised by the town council, residents have also said that they are concerned about possible anti-social behaviour in the Leekes car park at night and possible late night disturbances caused by customers leaving the restaurant.
The town council’s objection in full said, “Whilst supportive of the proposals for a hotel and restaurant on part of the Leekes car park, councillors had various concerns and therefore objected to this application in its current format on the following grounds: The height of the proposed building and lack of tree screening, particularly on the eastern elevation and the visual impact this will have on adjacent residents. Impact in the local highway and how this development will exacerbate traffic flow on the A350. Access to the site, which is currently difficult at times. Lack of pedestrian access into the site. Lack of parking and potential for visitors to park in nearby residential areas.
“Whilst not included in the application, councillors raised a concern that any potential illuminated signage, especially to the eastern elevation would impact on nearby residents.”
Leekes of Melksham was approached for comment, but had not replied by the time the paper had gone to print. A target date for decision by Wiltshire Council is set for Friday 19th April.
