Melksham Town Council has agreed to take over the lease of a sports field at Campion Drive, aiming to bring the site back into regular community use.
Councillors made the unanimous decision at a meeting of the authority’s Finance Committee last month, agreeing to take on responsibility for the field from Wiltshire Council.
The site, located in the Melksham South area just off Cornflower Way, has largely been unused in recent years. The town council is now planning to lease the space to Future of Football to provide an additional area for running football sessions for young people.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Adrienne Westbrook welcomed the proposal.
She said, “As far as I can see that area of land hasn’t been used other than for dog walking for the last eight years. To see Future of Football coming into Melksham is really good news and we know how many children they have got; they have got lots every single week. To have them on our land, which we are leasing, and to actually help them pursue their career is fantastic news, so I thoroughly support this recommendation.”
