MELKSHAM Town Crier, Jax Brady, has presented a special award to a future town crier in the making.
In September, when the town crier competition was held at the Melksham Food and River Festival, Ada-Rose, a year 3 pupil at Forest & Sandridge CE Primary School, was so taken with the contestants that she asked to have a go herself.
Successful contestant Jax and former town crier, Peter Dauncey, were impressed with Ada-Rose’s impromptu audition that they arranged for a hand-knitted town crier doll, complete with its own tricorn hat and bell, to be created for her by Peter’s wife, Joan.
Receiving her special award at her school assembly on Wednesday 10th January, Ada-Rose gave a demonstration of her town crier audition, including bell ringing, before being presented with her new doll.
Town crier Jax Brady introduced herself to the children and explained the history of the role of town crier, including the significance of her being the first female town crier for Melksham.
She told the school how Ada-Rose gave her ‘a run for (her) money’ at the auditions and said, “I had a bit of competition from this young lady here!”
