MELKSHAM Town Council raised the rainbow flag last week in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.
The annual celebration of the LGBT community is recognised across the world, with many cities hosting pride events. The rainbow flag was chosen by Melksham’s mayor, cllr Jon Hubbard, to fly this month at the Town Hall
The town council said, “We are proud to be flying the flag for Pride Month, recognising our LGBT community and supporting their needs. As a town council we are committed to upholding equal rights for all members of our community and are proud to stand together.
“We are an equal opportunities council and a proud supporter of the LGBT community. No-one should be treated differently because of who they are.”
The month of June is recognised as LGBT Pride Month to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots, which took place in Manhattan, New York City. The Stonewall riots were a series of demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. They are widely considered to mark the start of the fight for LGBT rights in the USA and across the world.
