The Melksham Towns-women’s September meeting was held on Friday 14th September at the United Reform Church Rooms
Acting Chairman Mrs Ivy Dixon welcomed members back from the summer break and dealt with the usual business.
A change of date for the visit to Dent’s glove museum was announced due to circumstances beyond our control. This will now take place on 9 October. Members were notified that the National AGM would take place at Cheltenham Racecourse in June 2019 and it was hoped that many members will be able to attend as this will also celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Townswomen’s Guild movement.
Later in the afternoon we had a most interesting, illustrated talk about The Great Bustard Group Project, given by Lynne Derry. A beautiful showy bird, the Great Bustard is possibly the heaviest living flying creature in the world, the mature males have a wing span of eight foot and weigh 40lbs and stands about 3ft tall, the females being a lot smaller! Although driven to extinction in the UK around 1892 the breed has been successfully re-introduced on the downs in the Salisbury area over the past few years and there are now around 70 birds.
The draw was won by Mrs Ann Harrison. The next meeting will be on 12 October at 2pm in the United Church Room, Melksham. All visitors and new members most welcome. For further information contact Tricia 01225 703927.
