Melksham Rail User Group is encouraging the community to use public transport again for leisure purposes now lockdown restrictions have eased.
The group says, “Public transport is no longer “essential journeys only”, though the Melksham Rail User Group suggests you keep it local. And remember, you can take your bike on the train.
“Our vice chair, Graham Ellis, took his bike to Oldfield Park station on the train on Good Friday – cycled back through the two tunnels (old railway line under Combe Down) then along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath all the way to Semington, then national cycle route 403 into Melksham. Lots of lovely pictures at www.passenger.chat/24857
“For the next two weekends (17th/18th and 24th/25 th April), trains are replaced by buses while engineering works take place.
“From 16th May, an extra train allows for day trips to Weymouth on both Saturday and Sunday from Melksham – day return fare £19.60 with a third off for railcard holders and groups of three or more.
“Should the next phase of re-opening go ahead as planned on 17th May, you’ll have more to do in Weymouth too – able to eat indoors, for example, if it’s a windy day.
“Melksham Rail User Group AGM is on 19th May – to be held online, but we plan to have a physical presence in a garden in the town for people who aren’t on Zoom. More news to follow!”
