Tributes have been paid to a popular youth coach at Melksham Rugby Club who has died aged 40.
Adam Wise, who coached the club’s under-10s side, died at home following a heart attack at night on 9th February.
Families in the youth section knew him as a passionate volunteer who gave his time to developing young players and building team spirit.
In a statement, Melksham Rugby Club said, “Adam was a much-loved coach, teammate and friend. His passion, energy and kindness left a lasting mark on our club and our young players. Our thoughts are with Adam’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. He will forever be part of the pack.”
Adam’s wife Lucy said, “The club was a large part of Adam’s life and was balanced with his passion for Lacock Cricket Club, as one season finished the other started. He was also a huge Bath Rugby fan. Above all this, he was an amazing daddy and family man who has left a hole in the life of all he knew.”
Adam scored his first century for Lacock Cricket Club last season and had been looking forward to the year ahead. His family regularly supported him from the sidelines.
A local plumber, Adam trained for a new career to secure better hours for family life after his son Percy was born in 2016. His daughter Nancy followed in 2020.
He was also passionate about giving blood and hoped to beat his grandfather’s record of 99 donations.
“Unfortunately, he only made it to 47, so watch this space for further details of the blood drive, supported by Melksham Rugby Club and register to donate in advance to ensure we can get Adam over that 100 number,” Lucy said.
Members of the community have shared tributes online. One resident said, “Such sad news. Adam was heart and definitely the voice of the under 10s. He had such a great connection with the kids and will be hugely missed.”
Another added, “I am grateful for Adam’s amazing volunteering he put in at Melksham Rugby Football Club, providing welcoming space and opportunity for U10s as a coach. Truly an asset to our community.”
Lucy said she hopes others may be encouraged to put a will and life insurance in place, saying, “If just one person reading this does this, I might save another widow or widower from having to figure out how to keep their home.”
Adam’s funeral will be held at Semington Crematorium on 9th March at 11am, followed by a wake at Melksham Rugby Club. All are welcome. Family flowers only. Donations are invited in the form of giving blood in Adam’s memory.
