WORK is progressing to install new eco-toilets in King George V playing field, which are thought to be the first of their kind in the UK.

Two environmentally friendly and sustainable eco-modular toilet pods – which use new technology that requires no electricity or water, instead breaking down waste in a vault using worms – will be installed near the pavilion in the park. It is hoped that that work to install them will be complete by the end of June.
A report to town councillors by the council’s head of operations, Hugh Davies said, “[The] groundworks inspection is complete. The units will be sited back and to the right of the pavilion as you are facing it. They will utilise pavilion power, water, and sewage to reduce costs – the only power required for the loos will be to operate the small fan, the conveyor belt, LED light and door timers. The water/sewage is for the handwashing sink and not the toilet waste, which will never enter the sewage system or the town’s waterways.”
According to Melksham Town Council and manufacturers Healthmatic, the eco-toilets, which can be found in France, have yet to be installed anywhere in the UK.
