Virtual runs for Avon Valley Runners

AS a club of over 500 members, the current situation has caused the Avon Valley Runners, to think outside the box to continue to engage members and to help to keep them fit.

Club Chairman, Warren Wade says, “Avon Valley runners is an extremely active running club, providing four physical training sessions per week and hosting many races throughout the year. However, the club has had to adapt due to the covid – 19 pandemic.”

During lockdown, England Athletics have cancelled all organised races until at least June at the moment and all parkrun events across the globe are cancelled indefinitely.  But over the last ten weeks, runners have taken part in lots of virtual events, the largest of which is the Rainbow Run which is organised by a DB Max, a Melksham based sports timing company.

Each Saturday members have been signing up to run 5k around their own chosen course and have seen improvements including member Sara Robert who has clocked a lockdown personal best time of 26:13.  Rosemary Barber took part in the European Masters 5k Virtual Challenge and came 4th in Europe in her V70 age category and 3rd in the British team with a time of 26:48.

Robin-Mark the race director of the Hilly Helmet Challege

Robin-Mark Schols, who is a member of the club, also organises the Hilly Helmet Challenge every year in August but has made the decision to offer the event as a virtual challenge as it is unclear at the moment whether it could go ahead in its usual format. Details on how to take part can be found here: https://www.entrycentral.com/thehillyhelmetchallenge.

Some members have also been running at home. David Warren ran a sub 4 hour marathon in his back garden while keeping hydrated with the help of his family and 84 year old Anthony Hickson has run multiple 5ks around his garden, keeping count by moving stones into a basket with each lap.

The club also has a triathlon section for multi-sport enthusiasts and a juniors section for secondary aged children. Members have also been observing social distance rules and using Strava to run or cycle, specific segments in the hope of topping the AVR leader boards each month. The idea, devised by the club’s Vice President Darren Wrintmore, has proven popular, with many personal bests being recorded on various segments across Bradford on Avon, Westbury, Melksham, Semington, Hilperton and Trowbridge.

Darren is also the owner and Race Director at Stampede Sports and is offering virtual run and cycle events to any competitor. Details can be found here: https://www.entrycentral.com/RunLockdown and here:  https://www.entrycentral.com/RideLockdown.

Many of the social aspects of the club have taken place online through Zoom meetings.

David Warren and his children – back garden marathon

Warren Wade says, “We currently use video conferencing tools to provide weekly sessions and workshops for our members covering subjects such as injury prevention, how to get the most from your fitness tracking device etc. We have held our regular monthly committee meetings and also fun sessions such as quizzes, all via video.”

The different sessions have all been organised by club members such as Garmin workshops by Sean Price, injury clinics by Mel Ward-Nichols, a quiz night by Sean and Fiona Price, managing anxiety and stress by Jay Sims-Bagshaw, personal training by Lewis Davis, running nutrition by Clare Wood and a Strava workshop by Sean some of which are still available on the club’s You Tube channel:      https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSJlK2xtIbV1cxV0SvFmOiQ.

In the coming weeks, they also have a Zwift workshop and Q&A sessions with different members.

Mental health is a prominent topic at the moment, with concerns that the lockdown could be detrimental to the wellbeing of many people, so with that in mind Jay Sims-Bagshaw, the club’s safeguarding lead, set up AVR’s recent mental health week encouraging members to take park in daily challenges based on the themes of give, learn, be active, take notice and connect.

Holly Newman took part each day by walking her dog, running around new local areas, learning about mental health provision and donating to food banks.  She also set up the club’s Just Giving page to raise money for the mental health charity, Mind, and so far has collected £190. If you would like to donate, use this link: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/runwalkandtalk.

The multi-sport section of the club have also found training difficult as, not only are multi-sport events cancelled until at least the beginning of August, swimming pools and outdoor swimming venues have also been closed and restrictions surrounding outdoor exercise has only just changed to allow people to exercise more than once a day.

Team Bodman taking part in AVT’s virtual triathlon

Many virtual events have also been launched through Iron Man, which have been attended in various distances by Stephen Clark, Kat Tailor-Laird, Esther Frawley, Rich Ayling and Robin Schols. The Bank Holiday Monday would have been the DB Max Westonbirt Sprint Triathlon in which many AVT members take part every year, so the alternative plan has opened up triathlon to all abilities within the club by allowing members to swap the swim element for anything of their choosing as well as being able to do all three disciplines at once or over a period of a week.

Club members Vicky Bodman, Jay Sims-Bagshaw, Maria Walters and Sally Frawley were the first to take part by completing it all together over Zoom and substituting the swim for a circuits session, cycling on a static bike and doing a HIIT session instead of a run due to injury.

Every Monday night, up to 15 AVT members also take part in a turbo session on bikes over Zoom led by Stephen Clark. Each session focusses on different cycling disciplines with a social element at the end.

Elizabeth Morris AVT secretary

AVT secretary, Elizabeth Morris says, “the Zoom turbo sessions have been a real success, by not only enabling members to supplement their training but also a chance to catch up socially. The engagement has been so high, we’re considering continuing them as the nights draw in at the end of the year.”

The juniors have also been busy training with their families, posting a number of garden workout and daily exercise photos. Training sessions are still being posted on Facebook by the junior secretary, Holly Newman, for them to follow at home as well as being encouraged to take on the Roger Bannister 1 mile virtual challenge and the 1km virtual challenge.

The club’s senior member, Max Davis, came 17th overall in the mile challenge out of 1193 participants in a time of 4:18. Owen Lythell ran the fastest JAVR time in the 1km challenge of 2:42 landing him in 77th place out of 810 participants.

The club has had to cancel many of its open summer races such as the May and June rounds of the Westbury 5k series (hopefully July and August can still go ahead) and the 5×5 series in Steeple Ashton.

Turbo Zoom session

The annual AVR relay has launched as a free virtual event, “It’s a fantastic way of keeping events alive and the idea has become extremely popular over the last few months as runners can incorporate the event into their daily exercise period,” says Warren. “We are hopeful that our two biggest races [Over the Hills and Wiltshire Half Marathon] which take place in November can be held, though we are expecting some sort of social-distancing restrictions may still be in place which will mean us having to make significant changes from the way we’re used to doing things.”

To sign up for the relay, visit: https://www.entrycentral.com/AVRRelay2020.

The Avon Valley Runners are still welcoming new members that they would love to meet in person once training at Trowbridge Rugby Club and Culver Close in Bradford on Avon is allowed to recommence.

“It’s certainly a challenging time for us as a club but we know that once this current situation is all over we will get back to normal” concludes Warren. Until then, any new members who would like to join us can still take part in the many different virtual events that they have on offer and they encourage anyone to get involved with any working groups and to share new ideas for the future of the club: https://www.entrycentral.com/AVRMembership

  • Charity CEO takes fundraising to new heights by working from lift

The Chief Executive of a local charity is working from a lift for three weeks in an unusual bid to raise vital funds for urgent building works.

Chantelle Mead from the Independent Living Centre in Semington is working from inside the lift for three weeks, only adding furniture to her ‘new office’ as mini fundraising targets are reached. The challenge milestones are £100 for a cushion, £500 for a chair and £1,000 for a desk.

She is fundraising for three essential projects for the charity, including a full electrical rewire, a replacement boiler following repeated breakdowns and a modern lift to ensure continued accessibility.

Alongside public donations, the Independent Living Centre is also seeking support from grant funders, including the National Lottery Community Fund, and has already made progress thanks to the support of the Hobson Charity and Stiltz Homelifts.

  • Melksham couple win slimming award after 10 stone loss

A Melksham couple have been recognised for their weight loss success after shedding a combined 10 stone.

Russell and Paula Eaves, from Melksham, were named winners of the Berryfield Slimming World group’s Two Together 2026 competition. The award recognises inspiring duos across the country with winners voted for by fellow group members.

The husband and wife joined their local group in October 2023 to improve their health. Paula had previously undergone spinal surgery and wanted to reduce pressure on her spine and ease osteoarthritis symptoms. Russell had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and said medication and steroids had contributed to weight gain.

Russell, who reduced his weight from 17st 5lbs to 11st 10½lbs, said, “In the past, for me, losing weight meant giving up everything I enjoyed. But when I discovered Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, it just clicked.

  • Football fundraiser in memory of Ben Smith

A football fundraiser in memory of Melksham teenager Ben Smith will return on Sunday 3rd May at Melksham Town Football Club.

Ben died nearly four years ago after being assaulted on a night out in Bath. Following his death, his family have been holding a regular football fundraiser in his memory, raising funds for three charities that supported them at the time.

The charities include the Ben Saunders Foundation, which raises money for children and young adults with cancer; SmileForJoel, which supports families affected by murder and terrorism; and One Punch UK, which raises awareness of the devastation a single punch can cause. Last year’s event raised nearly £7,000 for the three charities.

The event will feature a friendly match between two teams – The Bee’s Knees, which was Ben’s old football team, and his brother’s team, The Fat Heads. There will also be post-match entertainment by The Singing Herdsman, refreshments, a raffle and an auction.

  • Additional pitches approved for Semington travellers’ site

More travellers’ pitches are being added to a site in Semington after approval from Wiltshire Council.

Greenacres Mobile Park in Littleton, Semington, has been given permission to increase its pitches from 14 to 24.

The site sits on the south side of the A361 near West Wilts Crematorium and is home to static and touring caravans.

The approval follows a ruling earlier this year to remove non-travellers from the site to prevent overcrowding.

The additional pitches are intended to help meet an unmet need for traveller accommodation in Wiltshire.

Semington Parish Council filed an objection to the application, citing ‘greatly increased density’ and previous sewage overflow.

  • Love Melksham Column
A resident’s love letters to her town

Conigre Mead Nature Reserve

This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the peaceful leafy loveliness of a bench overlooking the river in the Conigre Mead Nature Reserve.

This gentle pocket of green gorgeousness, just a couple of minutes’ walk along the river from Sainsbury’s, is a haven of nature, wildlife and wonder. The three-acre plot of land was bought by a group of people and charities led by Dr Ian Cardy in 1988 to be given back to nature. Volunteers planted shrubs and created ponds and with help from the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and later Lottery funding, the space has become a haven for wildlife, with accessible paths and bridges under the trees so Melksham people can enjoy the beauty of the natural world in Melksham.

Today, nearly 40 years after it was created, this abundant green sanctuary is a perfect place to be immersed in the emergence of spring. The rich, earthy smell of new life seeps through everything. Tender new leaves unfurl on every branch, delicate white apple blossom petals flutter in the air and the velvety catkins of the goat willow hang in clusters over the bridge. It’s a wonderful exercise in mindfulness to notice all the colours: bright yellow aconites by the path, tiny purple ground ivy flowers on the footbridge and every possible shade of green all around.

  • Report slams council housing firm over debt and failure to build

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

A new report has blasted a Wiltshire Council-owned housing company, saying it is £4 million in debt and has failed to build a single house in six years.

Wiltshire Council set up two “arm’s length” property companies in 2019. Stone Circle Development Company was created to build and acquire homes, while Stone Circle Housing Company rents homes to key workers, refugees, and those at risk of homelessness.

The interim report by Wiltshire Council’s Stone Circle task group criticised an ongoing lack of scrutiny, saying important meetings were held behind closed doors.

Presenting the report to the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee, task group chairman Cllr Gerry Murray said, “This report does not make comfortable reading for anyone.

  • Melksham bypass decision due ‘early summer’

A decision on the Melksham bypass is expected in early summer as uncertainty remains over its funding and future.

Wiltshire Council says it received confirmation at the end of March from the Department for Transport that a decision on the A350 Melksham Bypass is expected to be announced in early summer.

The council’s preferred route for the bypass, running east of Melksham and around Bowerhill, was consulted on in 2021.

The update comes as the Government has published its Road Investment Stra-tegy 3 (RIS3), setting out national road investment plans for the period to 2031. The document makes no specific reference to a bypass at Melksham and includes no funding commitment for the scheme. However, the strategy backs the findings of the M4 to Dorset Coast Strategic Study, which confirmed the A350 as the preferred route for traffic between the M4 and the south coast and outlines potential improvements to the route.

Wiltshire Council has reallocated £10million from this year’s budget that had been set aside for the bypass scheme while it waits for news from the Department for Transport on moving the project forward.

  • Bowerhill scouts tackle 12-hour hiking challenge

Scouts from Bowerhill completed a gruelling 12-hour hiking challenge recently, developing their map reading and navigation skills.

Two teams from 1st Bowerhill Scouts completed the TrekQuinox Challenge in Bath, starting at Cleeve Hill Campsite at 6pm on Saturday 21st March and finishing at 6pm on Sunday 22nd March.

The challenge sees teams attempt to hike 20 miles in 12 hours before the sun comes up. One of the teams completed 17 miles, with the other team hiking 18 miles.

1st Bowerhill scout leader Neal Brookes said, “The initial thing is making sure they are aware of what they are actually carrying on a hike and what they would need against what they don’t actually need. They also learn orienteering skills, the old-style map reading and using a compass and maps."

  • Plans for four houses on former Bath Road car park

Proposals to build four houses on a former Cooper Tires overspill car park on Bath Road have been submitted.

The application by Melksham Development Company proposes the construction of four semi-detached houses with gardens and parking on land between 83 and 91 Bath Road.

The land served as an overspill car park for the former Cooper Tires factory, which closed in December 2023 after 112 years in the town.

Melksham Town Council has supported the plans as part of the long-term regeneration of the brownfield site.

At the council’s recent Economic Development and Planning Meeting, Chair Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “This first planning application marks a significant moment for the future of the former Cooper Tires site. The council recognises the importance of this area to residents, both historically and as a key opportunity for sustainable growth. While this is a modest proposal, it represents the beginning of a much larger transformation that will help shape Melksham’s future.”
