Weekly market returns to Melksham with a big thumbs up from traders

A WEEKLY market has returned to Melksham, and traders say they have been delighted with the support from local people.

The first market took place in the Church Street car park last Tuesday, and will continue to be held every Tuesday from 9.00am-3.00pm. And with a dozen traders and a steady footfall from the public, it was hailed a big success.

A wide range of stalls included gifts, pet products and food such as cheese, bread and fish. And traders were fully getting into the market spirit with rallying cries, deals and friendly smiles.

The general consensus from the traders themselves was that the market had the potential to be a huge success for the town, with a trader from Macs Pets stating that there was a ‘steady flow’. This is supported by Emma Coffield, a gift trader, who described the market as ‘a positive thing’ which will ‘bring more people into the town’.

Melksham Town Council clerk, Stephen Gray said, “It’s great to see a market back in Melksham. The town council has been keen to see the reintroduction of a market within the town, and the desire for a regular market was identified as a priority initiative by the Town Team following the survey carried out earlier this year.

“We’re grateful to Wiltshire Council for their support in getting the market re-established and I do hope that it will attract people to come into town on a regular basis; enjoy the unique shopping and social experience that the market provides; and take the opportunity to visit the wide variety of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants that Melksham has to offer.”

• The market will continue to visit Melksham every Tuesday from 9.00am-3.00pm in the Church Street car park.
