A dedicated team of volunteers has been quietly transforming the countryside in and around Melksham for over 40 years, ensuring that the area’s footpaths remain accessible, safe and enjoyable for the entire community.
Since 1984, volunteers from the West Wilts Ramblers Work Party have maintained and improved local footpaths by installing stiles, building bridges, adding steps and laying hard footpath surfaces. Their efforts have helped keep the paths open and have fostered a safe environment for walkers, hikers and nature enthusiasts alike.
“What began as a small initiative has now evolved into a structured and organised effort,” explained a member of the group, Martin Jamieson. “Every Tuesday, without fail, the current team of nine volunteers can be found outside. Their dedication is most visible through initiatives like ‘Clearing the Way in Melksham,’ which sees the team focusing on areas that need the most attention, keeping paths open and safe for walkers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.”
The West Wilts Ramblers Work Party not only sustains the paths physically but also fosters a sense of community.
“Team members come from a variety of backgrounds, all united by a love of the outdoors and a shared commitment to making the countryside accessible to everyone,” says Martin. “These volunteers have worked together for years, building strong bonds over shared tasks while working in the open air.
“The local council, which collaborates with the group to coordinate the work, has expressed immense gratitude for their contributions. Their efforts have saved the council time and resources while allowing the community to take an active role in maintaining local infrastructure.
“The volunteer team’s impact can be seen all across West Wiltshire, especially in areas like Melksham, where their focused work has cleared the way for many walkers to enjoy their outings without hindrance.
“Their regular work parties in Melksham and beyond are a vital part of the local community, ensuring that these beloved footpaths remain accessible year-round. As outdoor recreation becomes increasingly popular and important for physical and mental well-being, the work of these volunteers is more essential than ever.
“The legacy of the West Wilts Ramblers Work Party is one of resilience, unity, and a deep respect for the countryside they help maintain. In a world where development can sometimes overshadow the importance of maintaining public spaces, this group serves as a reminder that grassroots action and community spirit can make a lasting difference. Their contributions, stretching back to 1984, ensure that local footpaths remain open, inviting people to explore and connect with the natural beauty of West Wiltshire for many years to come.”
