A plan to create a community woodland and nature trail in Melksham is taking shape, led by Melksham Green Space, a community group dedicated to enhancing green spaces and promoting biodiversity in the town.
The group will plant 1,200 trees and 400 shrubs along a stretch of land that runs from Ruskin Avenue, near King George V Park, to the Eastern bypass.
A community orchard of apple, pear and plum trees is also planned as part of the scheme. The group plans to complete the planting by next March, with help from its members and community volunteers.
Nigel Benham, chair of Melksham Green Space, said, “We want to create a peaceful, open parkland area and a nature trail close to the town centre for everyone to enjoy.
“It will provide a valuable habitat for birds, insects and small mammals, significantly increasing wildlife and biodiversity in the area.
“Clackers Brook already provides an important natural corridor through Melksham and planting the trees and shrubs will enhance the area considerably. The woodland will also play a key role in supporting the town’s biodiversity plan which is being produced by Melksham Town Council, who are fully behind the scheme.
“In the future, we’re hoping that hardcore paths can be added to improve accessibility.”
To bring the plan to fruition, Melksham Green Space is in the process of applying for tree packs from the Woodland Trust and acquiring the necessary trees.
The group has carefully researched which tree and shrub species will thrive in the area, ensuring the long-term success of the project.
“These are really exciting proposals and the woodland will be a big asset to the community,” added Nigel. “It will be great to have a wild green area within easy reach of the town centre and close to so many homes.
“The plan is good to go and we’ve got our spades at the ready!”
