Wildlife trust responds to Clackers Brook improvement concerns

WILTSHIRE Wildlife Trust has responded to the town council’s concerns about its plans to make habit improvements to Clackers Brook.

The trust is planning to make a number of improvements to the banks of Clackers Brook at various locations along its route between Primrose Nature Area and Lowbourne.

However, at a meeting last month, the town council criticised plans to use excess “spoil” collected from the banks of the brook to create “spoil bunds” almost a metre-high in two areas near the brook, including an area of grass between Queensway and the Woody play area.

The council said that the “spoil bund” will create a physical barrier that blocks the view of the Woody play area, which could cause a “safeguarding issue” for vulnerable children.

They also raised a number of other concerns, including the lack of consultation with residents impacted by the changes, and the quality of the “spoil” to be used for the bund.

But the trust has explained that the “spoil bunds” will not obstruct visibility of the play area; that the soil will be tested for toxic elements; and that there are plans in place to consult with residents about the plans.

Head of fundraising and communications for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Dugald McNaughtan, told Melksham News, “Contrary to the opinions expressed during this council meeting, proposed enhancements to Clackers Brook have evolved significantly as a result of discussions with key stakeholders. Our project manager has been in regular contact with Melksham Town Council to ensure that issues raised are addressed in a final plan, and a number of changes and alterations to the design and method of work were made as a result of their comments.

“For instance, we have already agreed to test the soil for toxic elements and the proposed bunds will be no higher than 0.75m above the present soil level to ensure visibility of the play equipment, with the dimensions determined by available space, management considerations and so that they blend in with the surroundings.  “Additionally, the slopes won’t exceed 1:4 for stability reasons.  We have taken weed and future management issues into account; a shallow slope will make cutting easier and the spoil will also be seeded or planted (either grass, wildflower, trees, or a mix and match) to help suppress future weed growth.

“A comment was also made about not consulting with local residents – in fact our intention was always to first get a design agreed, with input from all relevant stakeholders at this stage of the project’s development, before asking local residents for comment – as is good practice.

“We haven’t got to that stage yet, and wouldn’t want to until we had that final design – to avoid the potential confusion of different versions being available.

“We have provided several opportunities for the town council to visit and discuss the project, but unfortunately this offer has not yet been taken up.  We will continue to extend these invitations to ensure that the town council, as an important stakeholder, is able to input to the final proposals.”

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation

Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths.

The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town.

The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “We have recently received a number of reports from residents about trees, hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and public footpaths.

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

Park Yoga

This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the sunny expanse of King George V Playing Field, in the peaceful presence that follows Park Yoga.

If you’ve been in the park on a Sunday morning in the summer, you may have seen people heading purposefully across the grass with yoga mats and water bottles. They arrange themselves near two friendly women in green T-shirts next to a fluttering green feather flag, inviting you to this week’s free session of Park Yoga.

This morning, as people arrived from every direction and rolled out their pink and purple mats, I was aware that I didn’t look as yoga-ready as most of them but I was also aware that this is a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Friendly smiles and nods of recognition were shared by a growing crowd of women, men and a handful of children, filling up this side of the field.

  • Are young people in Wiltshire facing barriers to employment?

By Megan Robinson, on work experience with Melksham News

A recent government review led by former health secretary Alan Milburn found that around one in eight people aged 18 to 24 are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The findings have prompted debate about the barriers young people face when trying to find work and gain experience.

While on work experience with Melksham News, 17-year-old Megan Robinson spoke to recruiters, employers and a university student to explore whether young people in Wiltshire are facing similar challenges.

Recruiters say a lack of experience remains one of the biggest barriers for young jobseekers.

Sharon Chapman, managing director of Melksham-based New Resource Recruitment, said many young people are struggling to secure work in a difficult jobs market.

  • New provider takes over waste collections

Household waste and recycling collections in Wiltshire are now being delivered by a new provider.

Wiltshire Council has moved to a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) model, with collections now carried out by Ubico, a company owned by local authorities which already provides environmental services across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire.

The household waste and recycling collection service was previously provided by Hills Waste Solutions for the past eight years.

The council says residents will continue to receive the same collections as usual, with no changes to collection days, frequencies or crews.

  • Research reveals Melksham link to forgotten England rugby player

A rugby historian researching a new book has solved a mystery that remained unsolved for more than 150 years, discovering that a long-forgotten England international was born in Melksham.

Phil Hill was researching the lives of England rugby players for his book, The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871-1899, when he began investigating the identity of Robert Henry Fowler, whose details had remained uncertain in official records.

The Rugby Football Union’s records listed the player only as either Robert or Richard Henry Fowler, born in 1859.

Newspaper reports described him simply as “a heavy, powerful forward” who played for Leeds and Yorkshire, while some historians mistakenly identified him as the son of a Watford postman.

Phil’s research has now established that the player was Robert Henry Fowler, born in Melksham on 6th February 1851 and the son of MP Robert Fowler.

Sam and Katy Gooding will continue to lead the team, and the business will carry on operating from its existing Wiltshire offices in Warminster, Melksham and Trowbridge. Clients will still be dealt with by the same team, offering the same outstanding service they have come to expect.

  • Plans unveiled for 200-home Berryfield development

Proposals for a 200-home development on land between Semington Road and Berryfield Lane have been unveiled as developers prepare to submit a planning application later this summer.

Bellway Homes presented the proposals at a public consultation held at Berryfield Village Hall last month, where residents were invited to view the plans and provide feedback.

The proposed development would cover around 11 hectares. The site includes three agricultural fields, together with previously developed land containing dilapidated Second World War-era buildings and land currently occupied by chicken sheds.
