Wilts Walking Football Club have reached the finals of the FA Peoples Cup for the second year running.
The FA Peoples cup is the largest tournament in England, and Walking Football is one of 15 categories, with over 250 teams.
Wilts Walking FC will travel to St George’s Park on Sunday 28th April as one of six teams to make this year’s finals after two hard-fought regional rounds and 11 games, finally beating Argyle in a penalty shoot out, with a great save from keeper Ian Wilkinson and the deciding penalty coolly despatched by Steve Clarke.
Tony Norton from Whitley said, “To make it in 2018 was great, but to be going back in 2019 is a huge achievement for all concerned. We have players aged 52 – 62, six of us were there last year but we feel stronger this year with the addition of Paul Kelly from Melksham and Steve Clarke from Trowbridge.
“We have a great bond and team spirit and we feel more determined to win it for our player/manager, Alphie Archer, who last year was going through treatment for prostate cancer but has been playing this year cancer-free, after getting the all-clear in December.”
Walking Football is the fastest growing team sport in the UK and it’s not just about competitions, it is more about getting people over 50 active. In Wiltshire there are 10 recreational sessions which are turn up, pay and play. For more details go to their facebook page Wiltshire Walking Football.
