WILTSHIRE School of Gymnastics has marked the latest chapter in its successful history, when world medallist gymnast Ruby Harrold officially opened the new, improved, and extended facilities.
The gym school was reopened on Friday 27th November following an eight-month refurbishment costing nearly half a million pounds.
Gymnast Ruby Harrold, who was part of the GB team which took bronze in the recent World Championships in Glasgow, was guest of honour and unveiled a celebration plaque.
The centre in Bowerhill has been extended by 500 square metres and refits of the reception, kitchen, café and existing gym areas have also been carried out as part of a major revamp of the entire gym.
The extra space means the popular venue can extend its range of activities to include trampolining, teamgym and freestyle gymnastics.
Ruby Harrold said, “I’m really pleased to be here to help officially open this new extension which will be a great asset for all the gymnasts. I know this venue well, having competed here in previous years, and this new facility is a great addition for these gymnasts and I wish the gym every success in the future.”
Sarah Calvert, the centre’s operations manager said, “Our gym has always been enjoyed by all who use it and with this additional facility, we can ensure our local community and beyond continues to benefit from having excellent facilities well into the future.”
The renovations were made possible using funding from SITA, Community First, the Hills Group, and Wiltshire Council, which gave £400,000 as part of a wider programme to improve leisure and community facilities in the town.
Leader of the county council, Baroness Jane Scott, opened the new facility alongside Ruby Harrold.
Baroness Scott said, “The Wiltshire School of Gymnastics is a real success story, not only for Melksham, but the whole of the county. The venue is here for gymnasts and trampolinists from far and wide and it is well loved by people of all ages and abilities.
“We knew this was a sound investment and I’m delighted this extension has been a success and even more people can benefit from the wealth of sporting opportunity this venue can offer.”
