Young entrepreneurs raise funds for playground makeover

Pupils at a local school have raised more than £1,000 to improve play facilities after taking part in a summer enterprise project.

Each year, Year 6 pupils at Bowerhill Primary School learn practical money management skills before running their own business venture, using the profits to improve school facilities.

Financial adviser Tom Port took a Money Matters workshop, helping pupils learn key financial skills such as managing a balance sheet, understanding interest, spotting scams and weighing up financial risks and rewards through fun, hands-on games.

The Bowerhill Buddies (PTA) then loaned the children £500 and the children’s job was to turn this into a profit which they can choose to spend to make the school a better place however they see fit.

“Last year the Year 6 children chose to put on a craft event which was incredibly well supported by our school community,” said Headteacher Chris Light. “The children raised over £1,000 in profit once Bowerhill Buddies received their initial investment back.

“The children collectively decided that they wanted to improve the school playground by contributing towards new playground markings, making playtimes more engaging for the children.

“This was supplemented by Bowerhill Buddies contributing £4,000 towards the project, ensuring that the children’s vision came to life.”
