Young Melksham has launched a public consultation asking residents in the town about the potential future use of The Canberra Centre (the old Youth Centre on Spa Road) and if local people feel it should become the permanent home for the local charity and their work.
The youth centre was closed by Wiltshire Council in 2014 and stayed empty for about 18 months before Young Melksham obtained a short-term lease and reopened it on Tuesday evenings in November 2015. They now run five youth club sessions a week, Monday to Friday, as well as providing a free-to-access counselling service and holiday activities for young people.
The current lease expires next year, but the charity is now looking to undertake a community asset transfer to make the centre their permanent home and ensure that youth work can continue to be delivered in the heart of the town for the foreseeable future.
