OVER 120 players of the popular Japanese card game, Yu-Gi-Oh!, flocked to Melksham’s Assembly Hall last month to battle it out in the regional qualifiers of the World Championship.

Organised by local toy shop, The Toy Planet, the event attracted 125 players, making it the biggest regional event of the tournament so far.
The winner of the event was JY Sharif from Milton Keynes, who will move on to the national championship next year, where they will fight for a place in the World Championship.
“The regionals went well,” said The Toy Planet’s Kayleigh Rose and Barry Howard, “it was a really great turnout.
“There was a great atmosphere throughout the day with many people commenting on how much fun they were having. Due to large numbers, seven rounds were played, each lasting 40 minutes – but the event was all wrapped up by 6.30pm.
“JY Sharif from Milton Keynes was the overall winner and he will join the other seven players from the top of the leaderboard in the next round, which is to be held next year in 2022 – dates and locations are yet to be confirmed.
“We’re hoping to hold other large Yu-Gi-Oh! events in the near future, but until then we always have room for more players in our locals’ league, which is held every Sunday from around 1pm in store, located on Bank Street.”
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the number one trading card game in the world with over 25 billion cards sold. It was developed and published by Konami and is based on the fictional game of Duel Monsters, created by a manga artist Kazuki Takahashi, which appears in portions of the manga franchise of the same name.
