THE sun shone as residents turned out for a fun-filled day to celebrate the Melksham Lions’ 50th anniversary at a special Picnic in the Park.
The free community event was held at King George V Park and included donkey rides, fairground attractions, a dog show, a baby show and stalls run by local groups and organisations. Families were entertained with a Punch and Judy performance, watched Morris Dancers and met special guests Peppa Pig, Marshall from Paw Patrol and a Minion. It was also the last day of the year for children to enjoy the Splash Pad.
“We were overwhelmed by the support of the public, stall holders and local businesses that, along with the weather, made the day a success,” explained Lion Paul Carter.
As part of the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebrations, in the run up to the picnic there was a Spot the Golden Lion competition, where Lion stickers were hidden in shop windows throughout the town and residents were challenged to find the special Golden Lion stickers among them.
The winners of the competition were awarded at the Picnic in the Park. Paul said, “The winners of our Spot the Golden Lion Competition were; first prize (a family ticket to Longleat) Hayden Guy; second prize (a £50 Toy Shop voucher) Elizabeth Scammell; and third prize (a stationery basket) The Brook Family. Thanks to all our sponsors and the shops and public who took part. We have now completed two of our three 50th anniversary events and after our Charter Dinner in October, we hope to be able to announce some big numbers for our chosen charities; Wiltshire Mind, Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Julia’s House, Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust and Freewheelers (Bloodbikes)”
