The Melksham Towns-woman’s Guild had our AGM on 11th March. The Secretary’s report looked at all the activities undertaken during our 60th year since the inauguration of the group. Our celebrations started, like many celebrations, with a meal at the King’s Arms, Melksham, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The speakers at our monthly meetings covered very diverse topics; managing tons of waste, a look at life, Wiltshire apples, volunteers in Kenya, a Hindu wedding, as well as the creative arts of making soft pots and flower arranging for Christmas. There were serious elements to the talks alongside amusing anecdotes.
Last summer we hired the community bus and visited Bourton on the Water for a day. It is a beautiful town with many places of interest and the weather was good, which made the whole trip really wonderful. Another outing, this time a little closer to home, was to the American Museum in Bath for their Christmas event. This time Guild members used their own cars and lifts were arranged for those who do not drive.
We attended the Townswoman’s Guild (TG) carol service in Bristol Cathedral where Guild members from all over the country congregated. Unfortunately the heating was not working, we had been warned beforehand, but the service went on. TG was started from the Suffragette movement and were not going to be put off by the lack of heating.
Other trips included a cream tea in a member’s garden and TITCO’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. And all in all I feel we have lived up to the ethos of offering each other support and boarding our interests while having fun.
A new programme is being made for the coming year to include various speakers at our monthly meeting in addition to outings.
The talk at the next meeting will be about the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust at 2.00 pm on 8 April in the United Church Hall and new members are always welcome.
