Two students from Melksham Oak School completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards and took part in Break the Cycle event – in just one weekend.
Jack Elmes and Ryan Toop, along with fellow team members, headed for the Mendips to complete the final expedition of their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award on Friday 12th June.
They battled through the terrible weather conditions and completed their bronze medal task which was to plan, train for and undertake a two day and one night expedition.
But this wasn’t the end of their challenges for the weekend. After arriving home late Saturday night, the boys got up at 6.00am to get to the recreational ground in Bath to take part in Break the Cycle, an event organised by Bristol, Bath and Gloucester Rugby Foundations.
Jack’s mum, Theresa Elmes explained, “The route linked all three clubs and in total was 110 miles, so it was quite a challenge. Plus, they were the youngest entrants in a team entered from Melksham Rugby Club.
“The team was met at the finish line by friends and family who are all so proud that they completed the ride. I’m so delighted that they completed both events as it was aways going to be a challenge. They were both very tired, but still made it into school on Monday.”
