2014 marks the centenary of the beginning of the Great War and events will be organised all over the country to mark the milestone.
2014 is also the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section in Melksham. The local branch says, “For 90 years this band of ladies has worked to fulfil the objectives of the Women’s Section – Women Working for Women. We actively fund raise throughout the year to support Women’s Section Benevolent schemes offering support to women and families of servicemen and ex-servicemen.
“Though the Women’s Section receives no money from the Poppy Appeal the ladies of the branch actively support the local Poppy Appeal and provide the refreshments in the Assembly Hall following the Melksham Remembrance parade.
“Our Standard Bearer attends parades locally, at other towns in Wiltshire and further afield and at the National Conference.
“Meetings with a varied programme of speakers and outings are organised each month.
“To mark their 90th birthday the Standard will be blessed at a special service held at St Michael’s Church later this year.
“In May there will be a coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. Entry to the arboretum is free. Anyone who would like to join the ladies on this trip should contact Julie Carter, branch secretary on julescarter@hotmail.co.uk, for further information.”
