SWANS brought traffic to a standstill last week when they decided to walk over the town centre bridge on the River Avon, rather than swim under it! Local man Peter del Guidice caught the moment on camera at Bath Road bridge at midday last Wednesday, 2nd October.

  • Town tribute marks Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday Melksham will celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a special tribute in the Market Place. Two banners made by Melksham Flag Group, displaying an image of David Attenborough, have been draped from the town hall. Butterflies will also be projected onto the facade of the building to celebrate his birthday on 8th May. The recently installed tree planters in the Market Place will be decorated with bunting made by local children at a recent bunting-making event. Each flag has also been signed by the children who made them. Terri Welch from Melksham’s Flag Group said, “The Flag Team and the Town Council have worked on a special tribute to this most loved presenter, to mark this milestone and to remind people of his love of nature and as a tribute to the wonderful films that have been made.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Melksham runner sets world record at London Marathon A Melksham woman has set a Guinness World Record at the London Marathon for the fastest time by a female runner who has undergone a double mastectomy due to cancer. Jen Ferris completed the 26.2-mile course in three hours, 24 minutes and 45 seconds on Sunday 26th April, while also raising nearly £10,000 for the charity Breast Cancer Now. The previous record stood at four hours, 33 minutes and 11 seconds. She said, “I just hope this highlights that other people, even in the depth of despair, when you can barely walk through treatment, if you do believe, then you can achieve. I just really hope it’s a message that comes out of this. “I’ve already got the frame and the certificate and I just smile when I look at it and just say, ‘Oh, you never dreamt you’d be here.’” Jen, who has now completed four marathons including London nine years ago, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a double mastectomy.   • Charity nurtures self-belief in specialist school students Students and teachers at Melksham House School recently spent the day with an education charity nurturing self-belief and resilience. I Can & I Am visited the school with a special double-decker bus for two days. A total of 25 students cooked pizza and took part in a workshop focused on equipping them with practical tools that foster personal growth. Melksham House School is an independent special needs school for students with internalised social, emotional or mental health needs, which opened in September last year. Assistant headteacher Darren John said, “The buzz across the whole school was truly amazing during I Can & I Am’s visit. Both pupils and staff were energised, engaged and inspired. The team’s sessions were pitched perfectly to meet the individual needs of our students. This includes a range of special educational needs and those experiencing challenges related to emotionally based school avoidance. The activities were exceptionally well planned and delivered."   • Love Melksham Column – Melksham’s public transport A resident’s love letters to her town This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the cosy comfort of my soft blue seat on the 271 bus and celebrates the splendid range of transport connections that make Melksham so easy to get to. Situated in the middle of some great bus routes, Melksham is something of a transport hub, with cheap and easy access to our surrounding towns and villages. You can get to Chippenham or Trowbridge/Frome every half hour on the X31 bus and to Bath or Devizes on the varied versions of the 271, 272 or 273. With a very thorough loop around the Forest area and Bowerhill, this brilliant Bath-Devizes bus gathers up and drops off all its grateful passengers from every corner of Melksham before sailing off along leafy lanes from dawn till midnight. And thanks to an extension of the national bus ticket cap, every journey is still only £3. A smaller local service, the 14/15, winds its way around the whole of Melksham every hour, as far as Sherwood Avenue, Shurnhold, Eastern Way, Whitley and Berryfield, so pretty much every part of the town is served by bus. Buses are clean and warm, drivers are friendly and professional, fellow passengers are polite and respectful, and most buses now have USB chargers in the seats so you can ensure you have enough charge for the journey and beyond.   • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis Using genetic genealogy to answer family mysteries Withj the ever-increasing sophistication of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technology, building your family tree has turned from gumshoe detective work to scientific interpretation. Where I once studied documents, maps, wills, photographs and even family rumours, I am now looking at and being totally confounded by centimorgans and DNA matches. A centimorgan (cM) is a unit of genetic measurement. It’s what experts use to describe how much DNA and the length of specific segments of DNA you share with your relatives. Truthfully, that’s a bit above my pay grade. And it’s not something I have gotten into with Melksham’s history because I’m not originally from these parts; in fact, almost all of my family line left England and Wales in the 1500s and 1600s.   • Spring displays kick off Melksham’s window competition Town centre businesses have taken part in the council’s spring window competition, brightening the high street with colourful displays. Flowers in Focus on Bank Street was awarded first place and received a visit from Mayor Saffi Rabey, who presented a certificate to congratulate them on their win. A spokesperson for Melksham Town Council said, “Flowers in Focus’ win recognised the hand-crafted detail and care showcased in their display. Painted family portraits of rabbits, colourful chains of flowers and an Easter-themed giveaway could be found nestled among the window decorations.” Second place was awarded to The Hiding Place, whose window featured a hand-drawn floral frame around illustrated pint glasses and decorated eggs spilling out of bottles.   • Community effort cleans up Bowerhill Residents have collected 25 bags of rubbish from the Bowerhill area at a recent community litter pick day. Approximately 40 people helped at the litter pick, which ran for two hours. They collected 10 bags of waste in the residential area of Bowerhill and a further 15 bags from the industrial area. A member of the Bowerhill Residents’ Action Group, Mark Blackham, said, “We sorted all bags for recycling and took everything to Melksham recycling centre for disposal. “BRAG would like to thank the community for their support, but especially 1st Bowerhill Scouts and Beavers, as well as the team at The Pilot for allowing us to use their bins for some of the waste.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Primary school opens new ‘Woodland Wonderland’ library A local primary school has celebrated the opening of its newly transformed school library, which has been reimagined with a ‘Woodland Wonderland’ theme. Seend Primary School, which is part of The White Horse Federation, chose the woodland theme to provide a calm and inspiring space where children can explore books, develop their literacy skills and use their imaginations. The new space gives the impression of an enchanted forest and includes paintings of towering trees and animals hidden throughout the room, as well as cosy reading nooks designed to nurture a lifelong love of reading. The library transformation was made possible through funding from the school’s dedicated PTA and the local church, alongside money raised by the pupils during a sponsored walk.
