SWANS brought traffic to a standstill last week when they decided to walk over the town centre bridge on the River Avon, rather than swim under it! Local man Peter del Guidice caught the moment on camera at Bath Road bridge at midday last Wednesday, 2nd October.

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths. The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town. The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.   • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town Park Yoga This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the sunny expanse of King George V Playing Field, in the peaceful presence that follows Park Yoga. If you’ve been in the park on a Sunday morning in the summer, you may have seen people heading purposefully across the grass with yoga mats and water bottles. They arrange themselves near two friendly women in green T-shirts next to a fluttering green feather flag, inviting you to this week’s free session of Park Yoga. This morning, as people arrived from every direction and rolled out their pink and purple mats, I was aware that I didn’t look as yoga-ready as most of them but I was also aware that this is a welcoming, non-judgmental space.   • Melksham Cricket Club volunteers recognised in county awards Volunteers from Melksham Cricket Club have been recognised at the Wiltshire and ECB Grassroots Cricket Awards. Tim Carpenter (right) received a Lifetime Achiever honour while Paul Merrett and Andy Footner were nominated for the Champion of Girls’ Cricket award. The trio were invited to the awards presentation at Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol on Friday 31st July. The event followed the Metro Bank One Day Cup match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan. By Megan Robinson, on work experience with Melksham News A recent government review led by former health secretary Alan Milburn found that around one in eight people aged 18 to 24 are not in education, employment or training (NEET). The findings have prompted debate about the barriers young people face when trying to find work and gain experience. While on work experience with Melksham News, 17-year-old Megan Robinson spoke to recruiters, employers and a university student to explore whether young people in Wiltshire are facing similar challenges. Recruiters say a lack of experience remains one of the biggest barriers for young jobseekers. Sharon Chapman, managing director of Melksham-based New Resource Recruitment, said many young people are struggling to secure work in a difficult jobs market.   • New provider takes over waste collections Household waste and recycling collections in Wiltshire are now being delivered by a new provider. Wiltshire Council has moved to a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) model, with collections now carried out by Ubico, a company owned by local authorities which already provides environmental services across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire. The household waste and recycling collection service was previously provided by Hills Waste Solutions for the past eight years.   • Research reveals Melksham link to forgotten England rugby player A rugby historian researching a new book has solved a mystery that remained unsolved for more than 150 years, discovering that a long-forgotten England international was born in Melksham. Phil Hill was researching the lives of England rugby players for his book, The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871-1899, when he began investigating the identity of Robert Henry Fowler, whose details had remained uncertain in official records. The Rugby Football Union’s records listed the player only as either Robert or Richard Henry Fowler, born in 1859. Newspaper reports described him simply as “a heavy, powerful forward” who played for Leeds and Yorkshire, while some historians mistakenly identified him as the son of a Watford postman. Phil’s research has now established that the player was Robert Henry Fowler, born in Melksham on 6th February 1851 and the son of MP Robert Fowler. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Plans unveiled for 200-home Berryfield development Proposals for a 200-home development on land between Semington Road and Berryfield Lane have been unveiled as developers prepare to submit a planning application later this summer. Bellway Homes presented the proposals at a public consultation held at Berryfield Village Hall last month, where residents were invited to view the plans and provide feedback. The proposed development would cover around 11 hectares. The site includes three agricultural fields, together with previously developed land containing dilapidated Second World War-era buildings and land currently occupied by chicken sheds.
