NEARLY 100 women gathered for a party last week to mark the closing of popular gym, Curves.
The women-only gym, located at Avonside, is closing at the end of January as the existing franchise has expired and a hoped-for sale of the business fell through.
Manager Sue Armstrong, who has been with Curves for nine years said, “We are very sad to be closing. Everyone, staff and members, are devastated. We have 240 members – it’s not just a gym, it’s a community.”
One member said, “It’s a great shame. Curves was perfect for women of a ‘certain age’ and was a real boost for our self-esteem. It was so welcoming – everyone could have a chat and get fit at the same time! There’s nothing else like this in Melksham – it will be missed.”
The gym has been open for 14 years, and during this time has raised thousands of pounds for charity. Since 2013, members and staff have raised nearly £15,000 for Breast Cancer Care. Other charities supported by the gym include Stepping Stones special needs nursery in Trowbridge, Dorothy House, Save the Children, and Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of Helen Christmas.
The gathering last week was held at The Bear, Bath Road. Sue said, “Thank you to everyone at Wetherspoon’s for accommodating us, especially Bea and Chris.”
