Broughton Gifford’s primary school, St Mary’s, has officially opened their new sensory garden, to help students understand healthy eating, after appeals for donations were sent out earlier this year.
Teaching assistant for years 5 and 6, Hayley Gardyj, who led the project, welcomed sponsors, students and their friends and family to an official opening barbecue on Friday 20th July.
The aim of the project is to engage and educate the children in the growing, caring, harvesting, and sharing of delicious and healthy food.
The children have been growing a variety of fruits and vegetables thanks to help from sponsors including Dean Perry of Perry Landscapes who made the raised beds, bug hotel and installed the fencing and willow arch.
Other sponsors include Lock and Key estate agents, who have been donating a percentage of their sales commission to school projects, Leekes, Travis Perkins, Buildbase and Countrywide farmers.
Hayley Gardyj said, “I have been overwhelmed with the kindness and support from parents and businesses to help with the garden project. I have worked tirelessly to make this garden real and it has paid off.
“Already the children love to help in the garden. They have learnt where fruits and vegetables come from and are excited to harvest and make food out of what they have grown. I love my job and the school and I can’t wait to see what can be achieved next academic year.”
