A LOCAL futsal player has been awarded his first international cap after playing for Wales
Sean Bryant’s debut for Wales took place at the 2019 Futsal Home Nations Championship at St. George’s Park in Staffordshire – playing against England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Whilst the championship took place over a year ago, it was only last month that Sean received his cap, which was delayed due to Covid-19. And the special delivery has brought back some special memories for the futsal player.
“It was a dream come true to play for Wales,” said Sean speaking to Melksham News. “I never thought I’d experience anything like this – I was treated like a professional football player!
“I was very proud to be called up, and to then play against Scotland was something I could have only dreamed of. It’s not something you believe could happen when you get to 30. I think it just shows to everyone of all ages, if you want to do something and work hard enough for it, you are able to achieve anything.
“I’ve given up plenty of time driving up and down motorways and getting back in the early hours to then go to work at 6am, but when you receive the cap it makes everything worth it.”
As well as playing for Wales, Sean has also played for FC Salisbury United in the FA Futsal Super League alongside another local futsal star and Melksham Town FC player, Luke Ballinger – who retired from futsal in 2019 after 108 appearances for England.
Futsal matches, which are played indoors, are currently on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, it is hoped that matches will return later this year, giving Sean more opportunities and more caps.
“We have been told that Wales has got some fixtures lined up for the summer against a number of teams, including Germany,” said Sean.
Futsal is a form of 5-a-side football played on a hard court with a small, harder ball than regular football. Substitutions are unlimited across two 20-minute halves, and the fast-paced games emphasise passing, creativity and technique.
